Before you go solar

  • Check your roof. Panels stay up for decades, so if your roof needs replacing in the next few years, do that first.
  • Know your utility's rules. How much you save depends on how your utility credits the extra power your panels send to the grid (net metering), and that varies a lot by state and utility.
  • Look at shade and roof direction. Trees and north-facing roofs cut output. Tesla's design tool takes your roof into account, but it's worth knowing going in.
  • Compare quotes. Solar is a big purchase. Getting more than one quote is normal, and the referral only applies if you choose Tesla.

Don't count on the federal tax credit. The 30% federal credit for homeowners who buy solar (Section 25D) ended after December 31, 2025. State and utility incentives may still apply where you live.
